The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence Business and Aging Leadership internship is a unique opportunity for a Gerontology graduate student to experience the application of aging knowledge within a corporate setting and also gain leadership mentoring. It is crafted for students with demonstrated career aspirations of working as a Gerontology leader within a business, or those with a strong interest in considering this career path.

The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence is responsible for delivering training, conducting research, developing public awareness campaigns, providing consultation, and applying expertise in aging to The Hartford’s AARP Auto and Home Insurance program. The Center is staffed by five graduate educated Gerontologists with extensive experience applying aging knowledge for business success.

The 10-week internship is designed to fully immerse a Gerontology graduate student in the daily work of Corporate Gerontologists by working alongside the Executive Director of the Center, and a well-established team of 4 Gerontologists who have achieved business success over the course of 35 years. The intern will engage in activities that provide exposure to how aging and business successfully intersect in a financial services environment. The intern will walk away with transferable skills that can be applied to both the private sector and non-profit organizations. In addition, the intern will learn skills in how to forge non-profit /business collaborative programs and build partner relationships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a project(s) or portion of a project, to be identified and mutually agreed upon at the start of the internship. Examples include work such as: (1) Briefing papers on aging-related topics (2) A report summarizing the contribution of gerontology to business (3) Internal online communication articles for business partners showcasing relevant initiatives (4) Summarizing work initiatives to be presented at business meetings (5) Content development for a new training.
  • Listen, review, and analyze interactions between Hartford employees (customer care representatives and sales agents) and customers in order to identify opportunities for application of aging knowledge to the customer experience; prepare recommendations for employee trainings and programs based on analysis.
  • On an as needed basis, develop and deliver presentations on The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence and/or a specific project to business areas.
  • On an as needed basis, conduct secondary research on specific aging related topics.
  • Participate in a series of structured meetings to gain a thorough understanding of the role of The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence within The Hartford’s business
Requirements

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Current Gerontology Master’s degree student with at least a 3.2 GPA
  • Work or internship experience beneficial
  • Demonstrated interest in the intersection of aging and business
  • Leadership interest, experience and skills
  • Demonstrated appreciation of diversity and inclusive behaviors
  • Solid interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to conduct secondary research review and summarize themes
  • Effective team player
  • Highly self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Strong record of academic achievement
  • Ability to think creatively in completing tasks and in generating ideas
  • Able to clearly articulate interests

    This is a paid internship for 10 weeks during the summer of 2020 in Hartford, CT and will include housing expenses for candidates who live greater than 40 miles from our offices.
